The Nationals remained the part of the Coalition most likely to be supportive of preferencing.

In 2020, the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, with a coalition majority, issued a recommendation for optional preferential voting, with Labor and the Greens issuing dissenting reports, strongly rejecting the recommendation.
