And yet this place is teeming with life.

Margaret River region is one of the oldest seats of human occupation and continuous living culture in the world, with two and a half thousand generations of Wadandi Pibbulmun people absorbing and passing down incredible knowledge while living here.

But to the English settlers who arrived in the region almost 200 years ago, it might as well have been another planet.

Their story is extraordinary, and today we're taking a deep dive into the saga with someone who has unearthed both their records and their secrets and written them all down.

It's been in print for 10 years.

But I felt from the very beginning that the stories of the Noongar people were not mine to tell.

I've been asked a few times why I haven't told more of those stories, why there isn't more mention of the Wadandi people and the Pibbulmun people that were connected with the settlers' lives down in Augusta.

I just feel that it's better for me not to tell those stories rather than to try to tell them and not to do it well.
