As New York transitions from fossil fuels towards solar and other renewables, where to keep all that energy is a question that small communities like New Scotland and New York are confronting.

We're not sure that ICE's presence has decreased.

I think it's gone underground.

WAMC asked ICE to comment on the perceived difficulties in communicating with individuals after they've been detained, as expressed by the community and family members of detainees.

ICE asked us for the names of the specific detainees in question, but we declined to provide the names of our sources.

An ICE spokesperson responded in part by saying, quote, While in detention, illegal aliens have access to phones to communicate with their family members and lawyers.

The cost of living has skyrocketed across the nation, and utility costs are a major contributor.

Long story short, they need a lot of power to process everything AI is asked to do.

This summer, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a statewide pause on new large-scale data centers that, quote, threaten to hike up utility bills, deplete our natural resources, and create uncertainty for New Yorkers.

She spoke with WAMC in July.

Hundreds of applications going in all across the country.

And right here in New York, there's 30 applications for these hyperscale, massive data centers.

Progressive challengers to moderate Democrat incumbents fell short in the state's 8th congressional district, re-electing Congressman Stephen Lynch for a 14th term over progressive voting rights advocate Patrick Roth.

Meanwhile, in the 1st District, WAMC reports Congressman Richie Neal, a longtime scourge of progressives, fended off a primary challenge from teacher Jeremy Whelan in his bid for a 20th term in the House, though Whelan, a political newcomer, won an impressive 46% of the vote.

Neal will, however, face the formidable independent candidate Nadia Milleron in the general election.

Milleron won nearly 40% of the vote against Neal in 2024.

Her writing has appeared in American Poetry Review, Swamp Pink, Peach Mag, The Tiny, and elsewhere.

On August 5th, 2023, Alina was one of the poets who, along with Rebecca Shmeda, Kenning J.P. Garcia, Aaron Kelly, and Vittorio Reyes-Asili, shared their work at the Linda, WAMC's performing arts studio, as a part of a night of poetry and spoken word presented by the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and online literary journals Hobocamp Review and Trailer Park Quarterly.

According to Deep Vellum, her publisher's website, the title of the book derives from, quote, the Russian word which denotes a melancholic longing without a singular cause, longing for a better world than the late-stage capitalist hell we live in.
