The biggest thing that we do know about childhood Stephen is that he was considered exceptionally smart.

This is something his parents learned early on about him and saved every penny they could to send Stephen to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield, one of the most prestigious schools in North England, with a higher than average rate of A-level students getting sent to even more prestigious universities.

Fun fact, it's also the alma mater of the acid bath serial killer John George Haag.

So academically, Stephen seemed to be thriving.

At home, however, things were about to change pretty dramatically for the family.

Because in January of 1982, when Stephen was just 13 years old, his parents got a divorce.

Moira was granted full custody of Stephen and his siblings and moved closer to Wakefield.

And this divorce took quite a toll on the children, Stephen in particular.

Yet it was short-lived.

Soon after Richard's sudden death at Wakefield in December 1460, the Lancastrian cause surged with a charismatic figure, King Henry.

The Battle of Wakefield turned into an episode of tragedy.

York's forces were overwhelmed by Lancastrian loyalists led by Sir John Howard and the future Earl of Surrey, resulting in a brutal slaughter that cost Richard and his son, Edmund, their lives.

This loss plunged England into renewed turbulence with Warwick the Kingmaker, formerly a Yorkist ally, shifting allegiances to restore Henry to the throne.

So we have records of a real historical person living in the 1300s during the reign of Edward II called Robin Hood.

He's described as a yeoman from Wakefield, Yorkshire.

And furthermore, there's a chain of evidence that indicates that there's a woman called Matilda who marries this yeoman and changes her name to Marian when she goes to live with him in Barnsdale Forest.

Even more fascinating, this same Marian was the cousin of Elizabeth Staenton, the prioress.

If I hadn't bought it, I would certainly have looked at it.

Because, you know, those were in the days when the habit of buying a weekly music paper, and it was a paper, not a magazine, was established to the extent that I would arrive at Wakefield bus station on my way to school and would call in the tiny newsagent opposite the bus station to see if it was there.

And I can well remember the gloom that would absolutely descend over your entire week on those occasions when it wasn't there.

And this would happen because distribution screw-ups or industrial disputes, which was certainly a big issue in the 1970s, not as much in the 60s.

I guess at the time, maybe in the hipper boutiques in London, you'd hear music now and again, but the general ambience, there was no music.

No, no, not at all.

And let me tell you, I was, you know, it was in Wakefield in Yorkshire and those, you could not get far, further away from the notion of a kind of Carnaby Street boutique ambience.

You know, it wasn't, it was gents outfitters and all that kind of thing.

40 odd years it's crazy really and potentially it's not a cup final but it's sort of it's playoff it's playoff for the playoff isn't it you know if we can actually win on Saturday and get that widen that gap between Lee we've still got a chance of overtaking Warrington in third but they've got to lose last match of the season and we've got Lee but that's by the by you know it's all about this weekend but you know you sort of look at this and Again, Warrington at home is tough, which we're going to discuss, but I always say every week, I wouldn't want to be Warrington coming to Wakefield on Saturday afternoon.
