Wairau River

In the course of Hurricane Mitch, the Chulutecha River in Honduras received twice its annual rainfall in 24 hours.

Now, to bring that into a little bit of local perspective so that we can understand what that might look like, our main river here, the Wairau River, in the lower reaches where we are here, in the lower plains of that river, the annual rainfall, so the whole year, if we took all of the rain for a whole year on average for where we are right here, it'd be 650 mils over a whole year.

So that's just over half a meter, okay? For, now, this is for the whole year, not just the occasional storm that we have that gets the river flowing really well, just, but the whole year's rain.

Well, now double that and drop that in 24 hours.
