Poland is stepping up efforts to secure a permanent U.S. military presence on its territory and to host a European maintenance center for PAC-3 missiles, with Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz set to travel to Washington next week for high-level talks.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz will meet U.S. officials in Washington on Tuesday, September 22, as negotiations over a permanent U.S. military presence in Poland and a European maintenance center for PAK-3 missiles on Polish soil enter a critical phase.

The visit follows a U.S. delegation's inspection of potential sites in Poland earlier this month and comes days after President Donald Trump said there had been major progress toward establishing a permanent U.S. military base in the country.

The location of the proposed base could be announced soon, Trump said on Thursday, signaling that a project discussed for years may be moving closer to a concrete decision.

Poland has long sought a more permanent U.S. military footprint as it strengthened its defenses on NATO's eastern flank.

American forces are already deployed in Poland, but much of the current presence is based on rotational deployments.

On Monday, he met leaders of the defense, foreign and interior ministries, along with commanders of the armed forces and uniformed services to discuss stronger border security.

National Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday that reinforcement work is underway, noting that, quote, Russian's actions threaten the security of all of Europe.

The minister shared some details in an interview with Polish Radio.

Poland will step up fighter jet and helicopter patrols after another Russian reconnaissance plane flying without identification signals was intercepted over the Baltic Sea on Thursday, Defence Minister Władysław Koszyniak-Kamysz said.

Polish F-16s intercepted the Russian Il-20 aircraft about 40 kilometres north of the coastal town of Ustka, the minister added.

The plane did not enter Polish airspace but posed a risk to civilian air traffic because its identification systems were switched off.

Poland remains interested in taking a greater role in NATO's nuclear deterrence, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Thursday, despite his deputy saying Warsaw does not want nuclear warheads stationed on Polish territory.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland is interested in participating in NATO's nuclear sharing programme and is also holding talks on a proposal for a European nuclear umbrella.
