Any of the beachside cities you know if the closer ones like Vung Tau if you want to spend more time there or Mui Ne otherwise you can go further up to like Trang

or Da Nang and yeah so lots of lots of good spots to go

see.

And yeah, so Ray and Pete were still alive and Ray was pretty serious and drifting in and out of consciousness.

And they recovered them and they took them back to Vung Tau Hospital.

And Ray was telling me that he was on the operating theatre and he looked over and he could see Pete being worked on feverishly.

So can you talk us through this day in your past? Well,

yeah, we'd come off operations and we were supposed to have a bit of time off, and then we discovered that we'd been volunteered for a three-day operation up in a place called the Nui Dins, which is not far from Nui Dat.

You can actually see it from Nui Dat, and it's a bundle of hills down near Baria, which is on the way to Vung Tau, and it's a real high point, but it was known as a VC stronghold.

And it was fairly obvious because they could see the whole province from where they were up there.

I was only 19.

I can still hear Frankie lying screaming in the jungle till the morphine came and killed Bloody Ralph.

The Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears.

And so they didn't necessarily have access to, you know, appropriate drugs, resources, etc.

The army nurses at the First Australian Field Hospital in Vung Tau were obviously working in a hospital situation, but even they had shortages, you know, and the Americans actually provided them with a lot of the resources that they needed, even drugs.

Like they literally begged, borrowed and stole to have enough.
