And this is Definitely Fiction.

On this episode, we're continuing our read-through of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga with 1995's Setagamiya.
Kirk HamiltonHOST

All right, and it's time for another episode of Definitely Fiction.
Kirk HamiltonHOST
0:51
We are definitely here.
Christopher RuocchioGUEST

And, like, Hadrian meets Velka in book one, and I guess this is a spoiler, but, like, they are together for most of the series.
Christopher RuocchioGUEST
40:23
And I wanted to do that in large part because I was inspired by Lois Bujold and Miles Vorkosigan, who, like, not only has, like, a stable, loving marriage for a portion of that series, but, like, also has alive parents, right? and you know who are supportive and like present for his adult career and stuff and like man like there's not a lot of that in science fiction they're like their own families in science fiction right paul and jessica are an anomaly actually duke leto is an anomaly um in most of this stuff it's just like random people occasionally they have sex right but they're like not embedded in any sort of you know clan structure or anything right fantasy does a Right.
Christopher RuocchioGUEST
41:05
It's you know, they've got this sort of romance fantasy thing going on right now.
Christopher RuocchioGUEST
41:08
And it's it's not exactly oriented towards the formation of families and stuff.
Natasha WintersHOST

Thank you for the hug, Megan.
Natasha WintersHOST

The doctor from Vorkosigan's Hawkeye.
Natasha WintersHOST

Oh my God.

It reflects a desire for a universe where human struggle is absolute and eternal.

And on the exact opposite end of the spectrum from the grimdark despair of 40k, you have the suggestion from a user named Maker, who said the list was good, but desperately needed the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold.
speaker_5HOST
51:45
Yes, which is a brilliant recommendation.

51:48
Bujold's work leans heavily into deep political machinations, espionage, character-driven family drama, and the complex sociological consequences of militarized societies.
Natasha WintersHOST
4:46
There's a thing later where they're talking about, like, the bulbs of drinks, and I am fixated.
Natasha WintersHOST
4:51
But for now, I just want to mention that there is a point in the, uh, Bujold book from Vorkosigan Saga about the, um, quaddies, where it's emphasized more than once because of the fact that we are in, you know, we're floating, up and down are relative terms, and the people who have two legs dictate to the people who have four arms and no legs which way is up and that they should stay upright, despite the fact that their determining where, which is upright is, like, a complete fabrication based on what feels right to them at that moment.
Natasha WintersHOST
5:45
And it's always interesting to me to think about a situation where something as simple as I walk on the ground is no longer the thing.
Natasha WintersHOST

It's, uh, I...

Mm.

But I've thought a lot about Star Trek having stunners, or the Vorkosigan Saga, which is my favorite sci-fi series.
Jeff RichardsonGUEST
58:29
But, like-

Mm-hmm
Tara LeedermanHOST

... have to laugh.
Tara LeedermanHOST
54:53
[laughs] I read a review of Cordelia's Honor, which is an omnibus version of Lois McMaster Bujold's two f- first two books in the Vorkosigan Saga series, which were not both written first.
Tara LeedermanHOST
55:04
It's Shards of Honor which was written first in the '80s, and then Barrayar, which is chronologically after it.
Tara LeedermanHOST
55:09
And these are the two books from Cordelia's perspective in the early part of the series, and two of my favorite books.
SofiaGUEST
74:04
Ah, maybe I will think about it later, but there was something about this, like, um...
SofiaGUEST
74:09
Yeah, I guess in the Vorkosigan Saga, they, they have people making clones, and apparently, the people that are the typical customers, it's very common that they just want someone to fuck, and it's, like, says something about the kind of people who come to these establishments.
SofiaGUEST
74:24
And it's, it's kind of funny, this idea, that they're like, "Oh, yeah, it's very common." Like, this is...
SofiaGUEST

Like...

In Vorkosigan Saga you get planets that are based on governments.
Sam ParrishHOST
