DJ Broner cut his teeth booking shows and talent buying at The Alley in Fullerton, giving Southern California some of its earliest stages for The Gaslight Anthem and One Republic, while also directing his first music video for punk and hardcore act Emery in 2004, and helping route national tours for bands like The Matches and Voodoo Glow Skulls.

He later served as COO of a music TV network before spending two decades producing over 500 music videos through his own production company, and eventually launching Tough Management, spanning music videos, artist management, and touring.

Today, it all comes back to one goal, helping artists build real, lasting careers without burning out the way he almost did.

So tell us what's been going on the last three years with Cause of Affliction.

great bands that come to Hawaii, Screeching Weasel and TSOL and the Korats and the Dickies and all kinds of legendary bands, Sherry Poppin' Daddies, a couple of times with them, Voodoo Glowskulls.

But we've really started doing a lot more off-island shows and a lot more touring.

And so we did a couple tours last year.

Are you a Voodoo Glow Skulls fan? I am, yeah.

I saw them maybe like or actually no, my old punk band opened

for them in like 2010.

Yeah, that was on my list.

Voodoo Glow Skulls is one that I wish I had played.

They're really good.

they gave me, you know, got me hooked on Operation Ivy and Voodoo Glow Skulls.

And anyway, I came back to the US in, like, '96, and everything was kinda taking off, and anyway, saw bands like The Pietasters and Toasters and was kinda hooked ever since.

... like Voodoo Glow Skulls and Slow Gherkin, and all, like some really quality replacements where, you know, it, it looked kinda flawless up there.

But yeah, August was pretty rough, like, trying to get everything swapped out and-

Um, met some people down there.

We got to go backstage for the Voodoo Glow Skulls set.

Um, one of the, my friends had won a contest, right? So I met some guys in another band who were looking for someone to review an album.

Foolish Relics is the band.

We had The Barn.

Um, I saw everyone from, you know, Face to- Face to, like, Voodoo Glow Skulls, who were, like, hometown heroes where I grew up.

And the scene was so just vibrant and alive.

Like, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you could go to a punk rock show.
