Von Humboldt Elementary School

It's why we are coming up with creative ways to reuse the school buildings that closed prior to my tenure.

We are working to turn Von Humboldt Elementary School into a teacher's village, providing affordable housing to teachers who want to live in the communities that they serve in.

It's why we've spent years funding cost per child salary increases to childcare workers for the past two years, making sure that people working with our young people can make a living doing so.

And those services, in turn, drive crime rates lower.

Well, in Humboldt Park, a school that was closed by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2013 is finally set to become 103 units of affordable housing.

And that's the Von Humboldt School, which was built 130 years ago and is sent to be rehabilitated into new apartments, offices for the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, and community space.

In Edgewater, a city-owned property that was home to a streets and sanitation yard, is going to become 90 units in an 11-story building.

Now, both projects need to be heavily subsidized by the city.
