Vivisection

It is a deeply clinical, violent practice.

Vivisection is performing operations on live animals for scientific research.

It's dissecting something while it's still breathing.

The seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, sounds very fancy, Lord Ashley, was the vice president of the RSPCA and was also president of the Victoria Street Society for the Protection of Animals from Vivisection, which is surgery conducted for experimental purposes on a living thing.

And he advocated for total abolition of that practice, not just reform.

Lindsay offers this really lovely quote from Lord Ashley.

Well, if you look at the history of vivisection, I mean, the term literally means the cutting of the living body, right? Viva means living body and sect means cut.

And even going back to Descartes in, what was it, the 17th century? I'm trying to remember when Descartes was around.

There were procedures that Descartes self-describes where he literally was impaling dogs to wooden planks, cutting open their bodies as these animals are screaming in agony.

In 1988, Skinny Puppy released Vivisect.

This was the fourth studio album by the Canadian industrial band.

It had themes of animal rights, environmental decay, political corruption, you know, light happy stuff.

It also utilized tape loops, sampling, and distorted harsh textures.

It's actually a really, really good album.

And the actual name of the album is Vivisect V, as in V-I-V-I, Roman numerals, sect, V-I, Roman numerals.
