Viva Variety

comes to big, big, big shows.

Yeah, MADtv, SNL, Viva Variety, The Cult USA.

I really love that programme.

Ben Stiller's show, Dream On in Living Colour.

We were doing, we had done, so we did The State.

We did a show called Viva Variety for a little while.

We did a pilot of a show called Hey Neighbor.

Nice.

Nope.

Canceled immediately.

Then we did Viva Variety.

Then we came out here during Viva Variety.

You're hysterical and frequent.

99 star, Paul, Viva Variety, Reno 911, Party Down, Pitch Perfect, Beer League, and I could go on and on.

Some of my favorites are obviously MTV's The State, where I fir- first started seeing you; uh, Role Models, which is one of my favorite movies; Bob's Burger; Viva Variety; Wanderlust; Children's Hospital; Wet Hot American Summer; VHYes; uh, you're on Party Down; of course, Reno 911! is one of your more well-known roles; and, um, I'm actually in the middle of watching Miracle Workers, which I think is original and outstanding, which you're on as well.

So thank you so much for all the entertainment you've given me, and thank you so much for giving me your time today and being so generous to come talk to me.

Absolutely.

We did.

It feels like a lifetime ago.

Somehow at the same time we were doing The State and Viva Variety, I had a band.

It's kind of like a riot girl band in that time and in, uh, New York in the, in the '90s.

There's a great article in details magazine.

I think it's on my website that tells the whole story and so we really crashed and burned and nobody watched the show and it was fun it was a good special i think but it was just the wrong network at the time so that's that was basically the beginning and the end of the group because that went so poorly and then after that we tried we did write a book that came out and we recorded an album that came out but uh our efforts and then going on to making a new tv show or a movie never came together and then eventually a subgroup of the state broke off and did this show, Viva Variety at Comedy Central.

And that sort of sealed the fate for that era of the group.

So

I remember when Viva Variety came out and I've read a bunch of things and listened to a bunch of articles since then.

And what I gathered, I could be wrong, but what I gathered from it was it almost sounded like some of you thought that there was a pact of like we're only going to do things together and then when people variety came out there was some mixed feelings on on what had happened and the only reason i'm bringing that up is because back to you know things really happen the way they're supposed to in in retrospect i mean 11 of you always working together for the next 30 years on everything in the same it i mean it really sounds impossible when you think no it never

there was no chance i mean The truth is, yeah, those of us who were not included in the Viva Variety thing were very upset, naturally, because it was pretty clear that we weren't going to then also do the next state series at the same time.

It was too similar of a thing, and this was the next thing from the state group as far as the way we viewed it.
