You know, and I think there's a story about him, like, um, rushing Viv Richards, and everyone just being like, "What the hell does Australia have here?" And then he really doesn't become a frontline player for another five or six years, and he still struggles with injuries, and I think his career even was ended by injuries.

Gary Sobers - Son of soil, Son of empire. (tribute episode)

I think that's what was going on.
M
13:59Machel St Patrick HewittHOST
So anyways, I saw this interview with Viv, think it was on social media or something, about three and a half minutes long, and the reverence with which Viv spoke about Gary, Viv spoke as if he was some little boy in this thing who couldn't come anywhere close to Gary Sobers, and spoke about like when he was in his presence, just being like, "Boy, let me just shut my mouth and listen to, to, to, to what Uncle is saying here, because no one can't chat to Uncle," right? And that's Viv Richards, right? That's Viv Richards who to some people is seen as, some might say, some would argue that he's one of the greatest to, to ever come out of the Caribbean, much less, much less if you spoke about the world game, right? But can that be, and again, like I say, this is no slight on Gary.
M
14:45Machel St Patrick HewittHOST
Gary is Gary, right? But can that be hard to live under...
M
14:53Machel St Patrick HewittHOST
Maybe not for you and me.

And so there was an evolution there that was, "Right, we can have Black leadership with excellence.
S
17:46Suresh RaoGUEST
We can have a Black player who is bar none the best player in the world.
S
17:50Suresh RaoGUEST
That is something to aspire to." You know, and I imagine a young Viv Richards watching this thinking, "I could impose my own talent on the world as well.
S
17:58Suresh RaoGUEST
I could express that freely." And so the, he, he was very much the forerunner.
