As we pass Cape Florida Light, once a scene of the worst Indian atrocities, we are reminded that here and on Virginia Key, which is the first and most eastern of the keys or islands of the Florida Reef, was found but few years since a species of crocodile, and since then several have been found of the largest kind.

This was news to naturalists as the alligator was supposed to be the only example of the group known to our country.

The Seminole Indians of Florida seem to be familiar with these crocodiles, calling them very wisely thin-nosed alligators, this indicating their perception of the principal character which distinguishes them from the alligators.

Their marine science school is right on Virginia Key, which is right across the bridge from Key Biscayne.

Just to explain what it is, because it's a specific crisis here that we're talking about.

It was first identified off of Virginia Key near Miami in the fall of 2014.

So almost exactly about 10 years ago of that window that Mike was describing to me.

The cause is still not fully identified, but it's a bacteria that appeared to be involved since like the antibiotic treatment slows its progression.
