However, I think people don't really think much about that dating has becoming more and more political, that there's these larger forces that impacted our ways to find love and not just find love, but impact our ways to connect with each other.

There's, you know, the politics, you know, in China's case, it's a one-child policy.

There's the technology when AI is really coming full on as a force to impact our dating lives.

there's also cultural, there's also economy, and all these lighter forces kind of predetermine somehow our ways of dating.

And I really wanted to use this film to interrogate how these forces affect us, but also how can we move beyond that to reimagine what are the ingredients that can redefine how we connect with each other in a meaningful, authentic way, right? So that's, I think, the larger kind of scope of questions that I was trying to explore throughout the film.

So what made it, you know, what made you say these three guys? What was it about them?

Feng says what interested her about the ancient nushu language is how it might relate to the lives of Chinese women today.

I think that every woman's personal experience in their daily struggles is political.

We're always, always struggling between the social expectations, between our traditional values, and who we want to be, our individual identities.

And that dilemma is in every woman.

And including myself

Feng says that the nu shu language gave women some agency.

The power of it, even back then, I say it's very much the Chinese way of feminism.

It's not about throwing away the system or changing the system and having protests, whi- which is completely impossible at the time.
