Video Archives

For today's episode, I am joined with Gala Avery, who is a writer, producer, film critic, and podcaster with a deep passion for cinema and film history.

She is a producer and on-air contributor to the Video Archives podcast alongside Quentin Tarantino and her father, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roger Avery, where they explore an eclectic collection of movies originally housed at the legendary Video Archives video store.

Gala is also the creator and host of The Gala Show, an interview series exploring film, television, theater, podcasting, and culture.

Beyond podcasting, she has curated programs for Arrow Streaming, written about film, moderated events at the New Beverly Cinema, and works as director of development for Team Avery.

You can't help thinking about young actors of any generation.

And I can't help thinking about me and my buddies at Video Archives.

I mean, it's very, very small.

Not many of us were quite as...

So that's our first film.

So that's our first taste, our first group.

of uh the grand national picture that we're gonna have at at the video archives and that's a nice little nutshell of uh uh of the grand national picture story just you know told them in that uh uh

Yeah, so this is really exciting.

Yeah.

And, uh, I know there's been a number of articles about it recently, uh, but it is the golden age of the microcinema, and I definitely feel like, uh, Quentin's Video Archives, uh, Cinema Club over at The Vista has been leading the way with that, you know, alongside Whammy.

Uh, and I wanna point out something very exciting coming to, uh, Video Archives in September.

Yes

... has put together, uh, a small retrospective of a Poverty Row, uh, studio called Grand National Pictures, um, that was active for a few brief years in the '30s, and I know he's really hot and excited about all these movies.

And any time he's this excited to be sharing these new discoveries with people, I am fucking excited.

I know we talked about this extensively with, like, the William Beaudine films that played at both the New Beverly, and Video Archives, and The Vista this year.
