Victoria sponge

On a given weekend in villages and towns and city streets all across England and Wales, ordinary people, and some rather extraordinary ones, throw open their garden gates and invite strangers in.

You pay a few pounds, you wander through someone's private paradise, borders they've tended for decades, and then, this being Britain, you sit down to a slice of homemade Victoria sponge and a cup of tea.

And every penny goes to charity, most of it to the nurses.

And it, it is possibly one of the most charming institutions in the entire country, and if you're an American who loves Britain, exactly the kind of authentic, off the beaten path experience that you probably dream about.

On the cake menu, there's usually a lemon drizzle, and there's, I think, as you, uh, rightly say, almost universally a Victoria sponge.

Um, and people love the cake, they love the tea, they love the time spent in someone's private sanctuary in a beautiful garden.
