But yes, as you say, there are other ways of presenting Augustus as the leader of the Roman state.

And so, uh, the sculpture, the statue, uh, which was found on the Via Labicana in Rome, uh, which is him, as you say, James, as Pontifex Maximus, and we know that, that he's re- represented as a priest.

He's wearing a toga, but the hood of the toga is pulled up, and whenever we see that in Roman sculpture and statuary, uh, we know that that is someone who is a priest, whether they are an augur or a pontiff or another type of priest.

Uh, and Augustus held every single priestly office in the state.

But the basic principle is the same.

One of the most beautiful surviving pieces is the Porta Maggiore in Rome, which is actually the gate where the Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus crossed the Via Labicana and Via Prinistina.

The whole structure is covered with inscriptions boasting about the emperors who built it.

Claudius, then Vespasian, then Titus, they all added their names.
