Vézelay

Philip marched into the district and repressed the wrongdoers with a firm hand.

In September of 1180, he was at the castle of Pierre Pertuis near Vézelay.

He presided at a royal court in which the grievance of the Church of Mâcon against Count Gerard of Vienne was heard.

The judgment was wholly against the count.

Most important of all, he drew up in the presence of his household and his friends his personal testament and his order for the government of the realm.

It was a constitutional document of the first importance, and the opportunity of the crusade was happily taken to avoid the disturbances which its articles would under ordinary circumstances inevitably have caused.

On July 1, 1190, the two kings met at Vézelay with innumerable hosts, and the carnal side of their expedition showed itself clearly enough, for they agreed to divide equally all that they should gain in the war, a bargain which led to much of the strife that marred their campaign.

Then the great armies marched to Lyon together, where they separated, Richard sailing from Marseille and Philip from Genoa.

One of the better-known ones is a similar distance to Saint-Jean.

um not walked that one yet but i've heard good things about it and again that you can the route that i had coming down from the uk was coming down what they call the route tourney from paris down through bordeaux um and again you can also pick up uh various other routes across the north coast

I draw your attention to, admittedly, it's a minority point of view, but a, um, an, an alternative perspective.

You can find it in one of the most beautiful churches in Europe, uh, the Basilica of Vézelay in France.

So not a Gothic church.

It's a, it's a kind of late Romanesque.
