Vespids

Hey, no problem.

Vespa mandarinia, or the giant Asian hornet, are part of the Vespidae family, which includes all wasps.

Of the creatures that we call hornets, most are actually different wasp species.

In fact, all hornets are wasps, but not all wasps are hornets.

So...

We talked a little bit about your tournaments, but part of the reason we brought you on is because you just took down the Nova Open with Vespids.

So we're not going to do a deep dive into Vespids.

You've reserved that for another podcast.

We'll put a link in the show notes down the road when that's here.

But how'd you go from big old stinky boys to Vespids being your team? And was this just like a one-off tournament, or is this your team right now?

I think for now, yeah, it's my team.

This Nova would have been my seventh tournament running them.

Yeah.

Yeah, so looking at the top eight, we had Orion on Vespid Stingwings.

Awesome.

He does well with pretty much anyone he plays as, and Stingwings win the whole thing.

Wait, did he win the whole thing? Did you even look at the final results?

Yeah, he did.

First place for Vespid Stingwing.

Six wins and a tie.

But we actually, though, talked about Nova a little bit.

So the winner of the Nova Open was Orion Wolfong, who's actually won with Vespids.

And next week, we're getting back to more Kill Team talk because Orion's going to come on with us next week and talk about what he figured out with Vespids.

We're going to get to know him a little bit.

And also, I'm going to talk more about...

You know, what's the oil derrick thing that's on Octarius? He had that.

That was kind of on my side of the board a little bit.

And he put two Vespids right on top of it.

Notes on the Behavior of the Social Wasp Polistes by Horace Gunthorpe.

For more information or to volunteer, please visit LibriVox.org. One day last September, the writer picked up a nest of the common social wasp Polistes, which had been detached from its support, and placed it upon his desk.

A short time later he was attracted by a scratching sound, and discovered that one of the wasps was just beginning to cut the cap from its cell preparatory to emerging.

During the next few days a series of observations were made and notes taken covering the behavior of the wasps which emerged from their cells during that period.

Miss Entemann footnote A has made a careful study of the instincts of the social wasps, and while the observations recorded in the present paper are largely corroborative of her work, some interesting details are here added.
