DF Direct Q+A: Hands-On With Steam Frame, Half-Life Alyx Standalone + More
J
31:14John LinnemanHOST
Yeah, this is a tricky one, and I don't think...
J
31:16John LinnemanHOST
So the frame pacing issue we've always talked about is due to, uh, capping the frame rate below the VSync or the s- the refresh rate.
J
31:26John LinnemanHOST
So you're gonna see it if you're at 30 FPS in a 60 hertz container, or 60 hertz... 60 FPS in a 120 hertz container if the game doesn't perform it correctly.
J
31:36John LinnemanHOST
And because 60 FPS has become so more prevalent this generation, it feels like we haven't seen it as often, but it does still creep up.
DF Direct Weekly #281: Kojima's Psyint Canned By Sony, Coming To Xbox, Switch 2 VRR, Ocarina of Time
J
30:13John LinnemanHOST
But the games themselves, if they don't support it, will not actually use it.
J
30:20John LinnemanHOST
You just get a Vsync'd presentation.
R
30:22Rich LeadbetterHOST
Mm-hmm.
J
30:23John LinnemanHOST
So I tried a bunch of different games like this.
J
30:33John LinnemanHOST
In handheld it's great, but in docked mode it was never great because it's like 100 to 120-ish, right? So it's always kinda unstable, so you get judder.
J
30:43John LinnemanHOST
Even with VRR enabled, it's the same.
J
30:45John LinnemanHOST
You get the same judder, same Vsync presentation, so it's clearly not working there.
J
30:50John LinnemanHOST
Uh, then I went over to Capcom's games, stuff like Onimusha, Resident Evil: Requiem, which again, uh, they...
Geekshow Arcade: GTA 6 & Ocarina of Time!
T
62:36TonyHOST
Well, they're gonna do eight players split screen on this, right?
J
62:37JarenPANELIST
... double buffered VSync, so I, I don't know.
T
62:40TonyHOST
That's gonna be wild.
J
62:41JarenPANELIST
Um, Xbox continues to destroy Game Pass value.
Boktai - The Sun Is in Your Hands
D
59:41DannyHOST
Uh, but yeah, I, I just wouldn't r- I wouldn't recommend Zone of Enders: The 2nd Runner on PC.
D
59:45DannyHOST
Um, especially given that, uh, it, unless you do the Vsync off, the frame rate, or, or like game speed is tied to frame rate.
D
59:53DannyHOST
But, uh, even without that, it's just not that great of a game.
A
59:56AustinHOST
Yeah.
Game Junk Episode #280: GTA VI Extended Look Reaction
F
30:03FrankHOST
Obviously, they're aware of this, and this is the biggest game ever.
F
30:06FrankHOST
How polished will this game be? How many bugs will there be? Will it run on everyone's video card on PC that is complaining about vSync on their specific video card and CPU setup? Well,
S
30:18SeanHOST
that's why they're not launching on PC, right? Oh, they're not? Okay, good.
F
30:22FrankHOST
Fuck them.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Review Discussion w/ FightinCowboy — This Combat Is Insane
F
44:54FightinCowboyGUEST
It was almost like an artificial...
F
44:56FightinCowboyGUEST
Like you know how like when you, if you don't have VSync or G-Sync or anything on how you get like a screen tear?
R
45:00RurikhanHOST
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
F
45:01FightinCowboyGUEST
I was, I was, frame interpolation was generating a screen tear like that.
TVGP Episode 984: Surgery, Surgery
M
72:13Michael HannonHOST
I think I've resolved patch 1.0.2, I think resolved a good amount of it.
M
72:19Michael HannonHOST
And then I think me changing my VSync from on to adaptive helped a whole lot.
M
72:25Michael HannonHOST
But there's still that kind of stuff of like, But this game didn't come in hot with 1.0. Like, it's in a really good spot, but kind of have to keep patching it and, like, smoothing out a lot of the kind of outlying performance issues, which they'll get to over time.
M
72:41Michael HannonHOST
I think every patch they've come out with over the last couple weeks has been... like a big step forward which i think is really good and like each one of their passion notes is just like dozens and dozens and dozens of uh like weird outlet out uh lying edge case bugs which i think is really good um so Fields of Mystery is really great.
Zone of the Enders The 2nd Runner
D
7:15DannyHOST
And my monitor is 165 hertz.
D
7:18DannyHOST
If you turn on Vsync, and the game originally is supposed to be 60 frames per second, I believe.
D
7:25DannyHOST
If you turn on Vsync, which is supposed to synchronize the frame rate of the game to the frame rate of your monitor...
D
7:34DannyHOST
Because game speed is tied to frame rate for some reason, the game now plays at 165 over 60, which is about 2.75x speed.
D
7:48DannyHOST
But just in weird ways.
Boycotts, Leaks, and Crypto Scams - Playstation Blackout | 2XKO | GTA 6 Leaked Build
B
47:01BradHOST
[laughs] Like, I don't, I don't think they're building new infrastructure just for 2XKO.
T
47:05TerrenceHOST
S- so, and also the other big issue I had with the game when it first came out was, like, they turned off VSync because they wanted the, the, the lowest amount of input lag as possible.
B
47:14BradHOST
Mm-hmm.
T
47:14TerrenceHOST
But in having it not on, there was a ton of screen tearing to the point where I was like-
T
47:27TerrenceHOST
That's how bad it was.
T
47:29TerrenceHOST
Um, so I just stopped playing it.
B
47:30BradHOST
Yeah, not, not having VSync is only-
T
47:32TerrenceHOST
I think they have since fixed it.
DF Direct Weekly #278: Sony Undecided On PS6 Price/Launch Date, Black Myth Zhong Kui Gameplay
R
23:01Rich LeadbetterHOST
Um, there's also been some discussion recently about frame generation, um, frame pacing because it, it's been a perennial issue with AMD, and it does seem to be the case now that there are solutions for it or fixes for it.
R
23:16Rich LeadbetterHOST
Um, there's a good video that's been recently put out by Hardware Unboxed on the issue where, you know, th- there are still issues there, but it seems to be the case that, for example, um, turning on VSync in the control panel e- even though you're using VRR seems to help a great deal there.
R
23:32Rich LeadbetterHOST
But there's other reports saying it only works well with, uh, in certain scenarios or on certain, um, displays, so that needs to be sorted out.
R
23:40Rich LeadbetterHOST
But nonetheless, I just think the concept of, um, going back to a three-year-old game and adding support for features that basically probably, you know, should have received them a lot sooner, it's a, it's a pretty good thing, right, John? Yeah, I, I like this kind of stuff, and it's interesting.
