Vasa praevia

Anyways, pulled up the screen, a million little, you know, limbs on the screen, and I was like, "Okay, either my baby has, like, three arms or [laughs] there's more than one baby in this, in this, um, you know, ultrasound image." So anyways, yeah, we found out we were having twins, and I still wanted to see a midwife 'cause I was seeing midwives at the time, but it, it, the pregnancy just kept getting more and more complicated.

So I mean, first, we find out we were, you know, having twins, and then we found out about this thing called vasa previa, which some people have heard of placenta previa, where your placenta's, you know, covering the opening of the uterus, the cervix.

Well, this is when a bl- a blood vessel, and it's much more rare than placenta previa.

Happens in only 1 out of every 2,500 pregnancies.

So me being a, you know, a nurse and a doula at that time, I had never heard of it.

I had never had a client or a patient with it.

But yeah, it's very scary because unlike a placenta which, you know, can bleed, and that's the risk with placenta previa, a vasa previa is, like, this unprotected vessel.

At least with a placenta, you've got tissue, you've got meat there that's kind of protecting the vasculature.
