Back to the Gen 1s, they had an issue with their VarioCam, that's the adjustable cam wheel.

The bolts in the back of that actually would just snap and fall out and the bolts would go through the engine and you would...

Engine would basically die.

And this issue has been noted in some cars outside of the recall batch and some as new as 2023s with very low mileage.

Finally, another rare issue that has been reported are the VarioCam actuator bolts failing on the engine, which has actually resulted in engine failures.

The bolts that secure the VarioCam actuators control the camshaft timing on the engine.

And these aluminum bolts have been implicated in rare instances of engine failure by potentially shearing or loosening under stress.

Now, there have been some aftermarket solutions created for this issue, such as the steel bolt replacements from companies such as Demand Motorsports that have been adopted by some owners to mitigate that risk.
