Helical Hydraulics and the Future of Electrification
G
2:28Greg ShtrahmanGUEST
About a year ago, we added our helical motors.
G
2:31Greg ShtrahmanGUEST
And for us, it's been very exciting because what does it mean? With the reversible technology, instead of using complicated proportional valves and large pressure compensated piston pumps, you can eliminate some of this by using our helical technology with variable frequency drives, VFDs.
G
2:50Greg ShtrahmanGUEST
And with these controls, what the idea is, you can vary your RPMs, ramping slowly up or ramping fast from very low RPM, high pressure situation, to high RPM.
G
3:02Greg ShtrahmanGUEST
And that's kind of been the game changer for us and what we're bringing to the table.
Getting in Sync with Permanent Magnet Motors
G
0:08Greg WeichmanHOST
Welcome to VFD Vibes, your place for all things related to variable frequency drives.
G
0:14Greg WeichmanHOST
If you're interested in how to make things turn, or manufacturing technology in general, then this is the place for you.
G
0:20Greg WeichmanHOST
Most of us grew up on induction motors.
G
0:33Greg WeichmanHOST
They promise higher efficiency, smaller size, and better performance.
G
0:37Greg WeichmanHOST
but they also bring a different set of rules, especially when it comes to control.
G
0:42Greg WeichmanHOST
In this episode, we're breaking down what makes permanent magnet motors different, where they make sense, and what it really takes to run them successfully on a VFD.
G

Today, I'm joined by Keenan Wang.

Thanks for joining us today.
The Buzz We're Missing: Why Veterinarians Feel Unprepared for Honey Bee Medicine
M
1:53Melinda WilkinsGUEST
And this happened in 2017 with changes to the Code of Federal Regulations.
M
1:59Melinda WilkinsGUEST
regarding the Veterinary Feed Directive, or VFD.
M
2:03Melinda WilkinsGUEST
So the VFD applies to any food producing animal.
M
2:07Melinda WilkinsGUEST
And in fact, honey bees produce honey.
M
2:11Melinda WilkinsGUEST
It's what we're most familiar with.
M
2:13Melinda WilkinsGUEST
They also produce some other products that you can harvest from the hive, including royal jelly, propolis, and of course, beeswax.
M
2:21Melinda WilkinsGUEST
So the whole point of the VFD was try to reduce the amount and the type of antibiotics getting into food.
M
2:26Melinda WilkinsGUEST
So It kind of makes sense.
Ep. 272 - Systems Integration Careers: OEM, Distributor, Machine Builder and Business Owner
R
23:28Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
I mean, that was invaluable experience because again, I'll make the sound bad, but to take a, all one vendor solution that's easy to integrate right they should already have the tools and the hooks and the you know it's taken a solution of four different major component areas and they're all from a different vendor that's a challenge sometimes and but that's what gets you good at integration it's like because you're not always going to have that single vendor thing you're going to have hey we standardized on this for our plc's but our hmis are this or our servo controls are this and you got to now integrate those i mean i have a common one.
R
24:04Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
It's, you know, they, they have a different VFD that they, that they standardized than their PLC.
R
24:10Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
We all know nowadays, if you buy your VFD from your PLC guy, it's kind of nicely integrated, right? Yeah.
R
24:15Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
But you know, you have to be able to, that's where true integration comes in is how do I make these unlike products talk together? Absolutely.
R
24:24Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
I think what the, as I progressed in my career, that, that became frustrating to me a little bit.
25 MINS LATER
R
49:45Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
That's just the way companies were built, right? You don't necessarily have to say it that way, but that's kind of the gist of it, right? It's just nature of the beast.
R
49:53Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
And if you do it the right way, it all fixes itself.
R
49:57Rich KuechenmeisterGUEST
If you don't extend somebody beyond what their capabilities are, You're going to have a higher success or higher success rate, right? If you just send somebody out that knows, uh, you know, VFDs and motor starters and all, you send them out for a vision application.
Is ICS/OT Ready for GPT-5.6 & Mythos 5.1?
A

Dragos reported that CommaSight conducted sustained reconnaissance of exposed US industrial devices between March and July of 2025.
A
7:22Alana MurrayHOST
The group scanned HMIs, VFDs, meters, and cellular gateways in sequence, essentially mapping how parts of the control loop fit together.
A
7:32Alana MurrayHOST
Think about that for a second.

But you can see those pictures there.
R
9:46Rob CareyPANELIST
That is all the new equipment that's in there.
R
9:49Rob CareyPANELIST
The new PLC on the left and the new VFDs on the right.
R

They're a lot bigger than the older ones.
R
9:55Rob CareyPANELIST
The place is running fabulous now.
R
9:57Rob CareyPANELIST
So hopefully we don't have any issues like we were having with failures of VFDs and not being able to obtain them because they were obsolete.
R
10:07Rob CareyPANELIST
Luckily we did obtain them.
R
10:08Rob CareyPANELIST
They were very expensive.
Episode 55 - From the Field to the Classroom: Apprenticeship, Mentorship & the Future of the Trade w/ Jeff Kunkel, Kunkel Electric, Inc.
J
5:58Jeff KunkelGUEST
Now, what has changed a bit is the modern electrician, you just have to have a greater level of tech savvy.
J
6:06Jeff KunkelGUEST
We can think about things like programming VFDs and having to get out an instruction manual or download instructions and read them to something as simple as replacing an LED driver.
J
6:20Jeff KunkelGUEST
You know, years ago we would replace a ballast in a fluorescent light fixture and it was six wire nuts and one screw, right? And now when we put those LED drivers in, some of those we have to program.
J
6:34Jeff KunkelGUEST
And so you have to hook your phone up or Bluetooth into it.
The Smokin Tabacco Show: Master of his "Domain" Daniel Lance
D
40:22Daniel LanceGUEST
And I would do that every day.
D
40:24Daniel LanceGUEST
And, uh, he just overheard me having a conversation with, uh, with, uh, another engineer talking about, uh, something called a variable frequency controllers or VFDs, uh, variable frequency drives.
D
40:35Daniel LanceGUEST
And, um, and, uh, I'm an electrician.
D
40:38Daniel LanceGUEST
So I,

Episode 423. Refrigeration Leak Detection & New Regulations with Leon Wurfel of Bueno Analytics
T
19:19Trevor MatthewsHOST
I used to do the same thing.
T
19:20Trevor MatthewsHOST
So adding VFDs to compressors, digital compressors, putting drives on condenser fans, low condensing, floating suction, all light optimization.
T
19:29Trevor MatthewsHOST
I've done all that stuff, but it comes back to the numbers.
T
19:32Trevor MatthewsHOST
We would always have to go and get M&V, measurement and verification, and then test it against this, and then you go to another customer and they wanna do the same thing all over again, but we just proved it with this customer that you'd have to do it all over again.
