Vampires

I've said it before, I'm really biased to John Carpenter movies.

And I'm Gary, and today we're going to review and discuss Vampires, which released in 1998.

Based on the book Vampires by John Steakley, with a screenplay by Don Jacoby, and directed by John Carpenter.

Ian, why don't you give us the synopsis?

Well, the story follows James Wood's character, Jack Crow.

Like, I like The Shadow.

I like Biodome.

So, of course, I like John Corfner's Vampires with Montoya Daniel Baldwin.

He was in 1987's The Last Emperor, 1989's License to Kill.

Um, let's see, the 1991 Not of This World remake, and Showdown in Little Tokyo the same year, 1992's Nemesis, '93's Rising Sun, Thunder in Paradise 1 and 3 in the mid-'90s, Babylon 9, John Carpenter's Vampires in 1998, the 2001 Planet of the Apes, and he came back to play Shang Tsung again in the 2013 TV series, possibly this was a web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy-

... and, uh, a major role in the TV series The Man in the High Castle.

I thought this was somewhere in the early 90s, late 80s.

But it's that John Carpenter vibe.

So yes, you heard it.

So today we are talking about Dead Birds, Eyes of Fire, The Valley of Gwangi, Ghost Town, and Vampires.

I was like, Michael Shannon, Henry Thomas, who, for those who don't know, he's the little kid from E.T. And then also subsequently became Mike Flanagan's bestie and was in The Haunting of Hill House and a lot of the other Mike Flanagan films.

And then there's also Mark Boone Jr., who folks may recognize from Sons of Anarchy.

And he shows up again in our bag in Vampires, which is kind of fun.

But yeah, I was like, what the heck is Michael Shannon doing here? But yeah, what'd you think, Abby? What did you think of Dead Birds?

You know, we, we haven't hit like any, anything awful yet, in my opinion.

Although I haven't seen his Vampires movie in almost 30 years, and I'm not looking forward to that 'cause I only mildly liked it the first time.

Well, I th- I think that's part of...

I have, I have not seen Village of the Damned, but I think that's part of why that movie hasn't...

I feel like, I think if John Carpenter had made another like hall of fame undeniable classic after Village of the Damned or, or Vampires, those movies might be reclaimed as like, okay, you know, he, you know, he was trying something.

You know, in, in the same way that like kind of the reclamation of the thing kind of also leads to, to other Kurt Russell movies being elevated, right? That like-
