Valve Index

The third tier is the phone... processing power like crapware that people could afford.

But then there was the Valve Index, which was kind of like the baseline of reasonable VR.

And then there's professional installation equipment.

But the Valve Index is actually really old, and we really wanted better new equipment, and we needed four VR headsets for that project we're working on.

And a while ago, like a year ago, when I went to buy more Valve Indexes, I couldn't get them because they'd already stopped manufacturing them and used ones were going for more than MSRP.

That was the state.

So then Valve was like, oh, we're going to make the Steam frame and it's just like the Index but better and smaller and it's going to come out and it's going to be shockingly cheap.

They had to basically build that from the ground up because Source 2 is a very custom engine that only Valve does themselves.

But yeah, just going back to the hand straps, that was always my thing about the Valve Index controllers.

If I'm interacting with any content in XR, I want to feel like I have that presence without feeling like I'm holding something all the time.

I didn't think they were going to include the capacitive touch in these controllers.

One, because they were just not in the data mining forever.

But also because it's clearly not a strapped focus controller like the Index were.

Because I then installed Steam VR.

So this is the machine I have my Valve Index plugged into.

And I had read that because of Flatpak and a few other things, that it causes some performance issues with VR.

So I tried it, and there were, there was some glitching, although it worked much better than the last time I tried VR on Linux.
