Okay, you mentioned the, mother, the, the, the dude having the, the, the, the really silly accent.

We have to throw in, if we're doing that, we also have to throw in the fact that the princess is speaking in a valley girl accent-

This is just the '90s an- uh, anime, and that's just what they made all the girls sound like in '90s anime.

So it didn't even clock to me that she was valley girl, but she absolutely is.

listen i'm from california and i have a valley girl accent okay i actually learned english in tennessee i started school in tennessee from kindergarten to second grade because my mom was like you're not gonna learn english if you stay in california where i'm surrounded by a bunch of korean people during recess i just remember being sad because i had to play with the legos when i wanted to play with the barbies with the girls because i couldn't speak english so i couldn't fit in because you know like for barbies like you have to communicate like the dolls have to communicate and like form a storyline so it took me a while to really excel in english and once i did i think i started dragging my words out because i wanted to accumulate my thoughts before i actually speak um i remember kylie jenner actually talking about this and she also drags her words out because she wants to think while she speaks and i get that

What is up, my friends? In today's episode of Real English Radio, you're going to learn about one of the most annoying accents in the English language.

And that accent is the Valley Girl accent.

Now, you might be asking yourself, where exactly does this come from? What region of the US do people speak like this so I can stay as far away from that place as possible? It's a good question.

And you're thinking the right way about this because good lord, this accent is fucking horrible, man.

I'm not going to lie to you.

It makes my head hurt when I hear this shit.

We started making fun of it in the '80s when it was only girls from the San Fernando Valley, uh, who spoke this way.

That's where Valley girl comes from.

And everyone knew it was obnoxious.

Everyone hated it.

You're a little younger than me, but, um, that had, you know, a, a punk character.

And also it introduced like the idea of, of valley girl into the, um, the universe and lexicon of, uh, suburban Midwestern America, which that's another thing I could digress on for a second.

I w- I remember life in the '70s before people spoke in the valley girl vernacular.

Like, "Oh, my God." Like, "That's awesome." Um, although it has connections possibly to, uh, beatnik, uh, slang, 'cause the Maynard G.

Krebs character and Dobie Gillis, played by, uh, Bob Denver, was always saying, "Like, far out," or, "Like, wild, daddy-o." So that using "like" in a, uh, intentional way as, um, uh, you know, some kind of, uh, uh, uh-

... non-mainstream way.

Like, it came, it became a thing.

But I find that interesting now because in 2026, let's do the math, it's like, uh, 45 years after the valley girl phenomenon.

You're totally fucking dead.
