[news music] First up this morning, the search area after the ferry disaster in Vanuatu has been extended with some 30 passengers still missing.

Now we move on on Pacific Beat this morning because the government of Papua New Guinea has launched a region-wide program to vaccinate young girls against HPV, the human papillomavirus.

PNG has the second highest cervical cancer mortality rates in the Pacific, with more than a thousand diagnoses and around six hundred and fifty deaths being recorded every year.

The driving force behind the immunization program will be Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which with its network of public partnerships, helps to vaccinate over half the world's children, in fact, against deadly disease.

We're joined now by Gavi's Chief Executive, Dr. Seth Berkhout.

And also just the premise of getting a vaccine every four months is, it's not something I think that, that was not the conversation to when we started the conversations about these vaccines.

Now, So now we're coming to a very, you know, the last resort on efficacy saying, hey, these vaccines prevent severe illness and death.

And I think the fact of the matter is that we never, not only that this was never shown to be the case, but in fact, what I consider a pivotal paper study that was published in the journal Vaccines, by Freeman et al, reanalyzed the clinical trials of Moderna and Pfizer, the mRNA vaccines, which is the highest quality data that you have, randomized control experiments, right? And when they analyzed

the

number of serious health events, that means that hospitalization and life-changing medical events from a very well-defined list that actually the World Health Organization set up.

A reporter at NBC affiliate WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., who catches wind of these claims.

And she embarks on this reporting project, and it ends up becoming the basis for a 1982 hour-long news broadcast titled Vaccine Roulette.

DPT Vaccine Roulette.

Just a note here, the people call this vaccine both DTP and DPT.

So you'll hear both in the episode, but they're referring to the same thing.

The whole issue was like, it was very complicated to determine with certainty whether it was the reaction that a kid had was coincidental with the vaccine, or was it some underlying condition that was triggered by the fever that they got as a result of this vaccine.

This is Arthur Allen.

He's a senior correspondent for nonprofit KFF Health News and author of the book Vaccine, the controversial story of medicine's greatest lifesaver.

When Aaron Seary started suing Pfizer to get what was in those vials and to find out what the repercussions were, right? Because what happened was with the emergency youth authorization, when you took that shot, you signed a piece of paper and you said that you could never hold the company liable.

So he was like, okay, what are you afraid of? What's in that vaccine? Vaccine liability is a very real thing.

And the fact that they make you sign these documents that you're going to take these vaccines, you're signing away your rights so that if you do have an adverse reaction, which they know you very well may, you can't come after them.

Because again, they're there to make money.

It was from you informing your staff that FDA's vaccine safety evaluators have discovered at least 10 children have died after and because of receiving COVID-19 vaccination and that the real number is higher.

You wrote that a public report would be forthcoming marking the first time that the US FDA will acknowledge that COVID-19 vaccines have killed American children.

Five months later, there was no report, and you were gone.

An FDA official report then came out a month after you left saying that zero childhood deaths were definitively linked to the vaccine.

So what actually happened

there? That's the reading of that? Okay.

Well, I would say that that's part of that report.
