I can't help but feel like there was an alternative future for FFXII, where Ashe was making deals with the Lukavi to get her kingdom back, doing a reverse Cecil, starting as a paladin, diving deep into the depravity for a goal she lost sight of.

Lukavi starts slowly actually possessing party members as you go, and one of your party members, someone not in the original game, maybe named something goofy like a Jorah, becomes possessed by Ultima and becomes the villain.

But I don't think they had enough time to radically change the story.
