So he's really fascinated with that.

My approach was inspired by a book by David Marquet called Turn the Ship Around.

He was the captain of a nuclear submarine, the USS Santa Fe, and he had been trained in that traditional model of naval leadership.

You give orders and everybody else follows them.

The problem was that he had been trained on a completely different nuclear submarine and only transferred at the last minute.

But regardless of who originally said it, the philosophy is deeply embedded in successful military operations.

Dima also points to David Marquet's work on intent-based leadership, which he developed while commanding the nuclear submarine USS Santa Fe.

I mean, you cannot find a higher stakes environment than a nuclear submarine.

No, you can't.

Then he left the U.S. Navy, spent some time with the Pentagon, left about 15 years ago, wrote his first book, Turn the Ship Around.
