Uribism

I thought, I know, I'll go and spend some time riding horses in this kind of gated horse world in Antioquia.

Because, of course, the other piece of the puzzle, which I haven't mentioned, is we tend to associate this kind of vision that I'd seen in Apartador at the beginning with a particular right-wing identity in Colombia, which is Uribismo.

Uribe himself is a horseman.

He is renowned for his expertise in the saddle.

And just as it's also a bit of a stereotype for people who oppose Uribe, the idea of him as a horse riding elite is something that they deride, they caricature, they stereotype.

And as an anthropologist, I'm not interested in caricatures or stereotypes.

I'm interested in understanding without judging, without necessarily agreeing either, but trying to understand how this everyday life world of horse riding creates a context in which that political identity of supporting Uribismo emerges or takes hold.

And because I am a horse rider, it gave me something I could have in common with people.
