Upper Skagit Indian Tribe

Where did these bears go? Answering that question became an obsession.

I spent hours in research libraries, poring over oral histories and traditional knowledge from the Upper Skagit, Silks, the Stalo, the Uncompahgre, and other Indigenous nations that have lived alongside grizzlies for generations.

Some of what I found blurred the lines between natural history and myth.

Others were harrowing tales of dangerous hunts.
