Upper Arlington

You've given back, you've participate, you sign up for things.

I know you're currently, um, you live in upper Arlington, you're vice president of the civic association, which my family loves the things that you guys put on, um, Santa in the park, uh, the Easter, all of it.

We love it.

We enjoy it.

It's...

Again, the parade's part of that too, right?

Yeah, so the 4th of July parade in Upper Arlington, the fireworks, that is all completely...

We work really closely with the city of Upper Arlington, police and parks and stuff like that, but it's a civic association that organizes it all.

But it took a while for me to figure out where my place i- was in golf.

And I, like you mentioned, high school golf, Upper Arlington High School, was a, a way to sort of feed that passion a little bit.

But then once I did it, it was like, "Okay, this is what I wanna do.

Now how can I do it for more than $500 a year?" You know, of course you-

But especially the players and the student athletes.

And, and building that trust, building that, um, that back and forth, being able to live- leave them a little bit better than you found them.

I mean, I'm still in contact with players from Upper Arlington High School days way back when, and I see them now, and they, they update me on their children and their change of careers, and some who are coaching and all sorts of stuff.

So, you know, you build those relationships, and that, that is a constant at every level and every position.

I got a tick before.

They had ticks in Upper Arlington?

No, they weren't in the woods.

So with that, I decided to drive around Columbus in my car and just take snapshot of pictures between those neighborhoods that were redlined as Tier 1, those that were preferred that had access to capital, versus those that were considered or deemed hazardous based on either physical or social characteristics.

So I compared, say, a street in Linden to one in Upper Arlington, or a street on the Near East Side compared to one in Bexley or in two Columbus neighborhoods of Milo Grogan and Clintonville.

And what I found in all of those first examples were streets that had very few trees, meaning pavement, sidewalks, roofs, and parking lots were all exposed to the beating sun of the summer, where in the Clintonvilles, Bexleys, and Upper Arlington's, you had tree coverage that made them almost urban arboretums.

By four o'clock in the afternoon, low-income neighborhoods can be more than 20 degrees hotter than their wealthy counterparts.

And what we saw in our community during COVID, when we closed the rec centers, when we closed the boys and girls clubs, when we closed directions for youth and families, we saw that the age of the perpetrator and the age of the victim in those urban neighborhoods plummeted and the crime rates skyrocketed.

So my book is inspired by women in my life, meaning my mother, When I think about my aunt who lived in the projects, we used to go to projects.

Shoot, I thought the projects was like Upper Arlington, man.

I mean, back in the day.

Until it got night and then the folks got to.

Week three of Ohio high school football, these were our top five games of the week in the state and our national game of the week, St. Francis to sales moved to three and oh, on the season after beating east high school in Columbus, 35 to 14 mentor gets a shell lacking from St. Ignatius from up in Cleveland, the 51 to seven, both teams now moved to two and one.

And what was one of the better games in the state Avon who came into the game one and Traveled down to Columbus to take on Upper Arlington.

The Bears now moved to 43, or excuse me, moved to 3-0 after beating Avon 43-22.

Upper Arlington has played one of the better non-conference schedules in the state of Ohio and are sitting at 3-0.

The Bears are legit.

Ryan Miller's son is the starting safety there on the defense.

Bobby Carpenter's son plays there.

Tavian St. Clair's younger brother is the quarterback there.

to say, hey, we haven't updated our kitchen, or we've got flooding in our basement, or we just think you got the sales that you're comparing us to completely wrong, if that's square footage.

And Upper Arlington's a great example.

Depending on what neighborhood you're in, there's a fluctuation in square footage, the history of the home, the lot size.

And so it's always a great conversation.

But wanting to make sure people understand there are opportunities out there.

So their property tax bill is as low as Ohio law allows it to be.

So we just did a, and we haven't gone through all the results and we haven't released the results, but we just did a survey of our older adults in Upper Arlington built off of a survey that the Age Friendly Center over at OSU helped put together.

And one of the findings that came back that really struck me was more of our older our older adults are more worried about their property taxes than they are their health care bills which to me I look at it and I'm like that doesn't makes sense and I think it comes down to when people are finding their property taxes more complex than they are their healthcare bills, there's a fundamental problem with the solution.

Now, Struttner, he was 24 years old.

He was a 1979 graduate of Upper Arlington High School and lived in the area where Duquette was found.

God dang, man.

So...

She was on her way home from school and when it became an hour and a half later, that's when her mom and her dad, they literally got pretty much worried and they had to start putting out research I mean, not research, you guys, but searches out there for her and everything.

And for the police chief who dealt with her and the case and everything and found her body, it said that Duquette's death was one of the city's darkest hours and left a lasting tragic impact still felt by the community.

This tragic death shook the community in 1980 and And continue to this day On June 3rd, 1980 The community came together In their pain and their commitment To supporting each other Upper Arlington is known as a community With a strong bond It has been demonstrated in many ways None greater than during This dark hour Our hearts continue to go out to the Ducat family And we wish them peace As they continue their healing So Um I want to say this right now.
