I don't think that UVA Health needs to seek Albemarle County's approval in any capacity.

And why would UVA Health even ask Albemarle County approval or anything of that nature? What the University of Virginia could have done in the joint session with Charlottesville City Councilors, Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, and UVA leadership just a couple of weeks ago was off the record let Albemarle County and Charlottesville know, hey, heads up, we have this deal in the pipeline.

Don't do it my way, go find a job somewhere else.

You're going to some doc in the box, and you won't be working here at UVA." That's what he was doing, okay? Compare and contrast what Craig Kent, the CEO of UVA Health, was doing to Superintendent Matthew Haas, also a doctor of a different variety, medical versus academic.

There is a better way, and it's already been proven.

Let's take a look at the University of Virginia Health System as one of the most clear examples I've found of an institution actually fixing this.

In fiscal year 2020, UVA Health took legal judgments against 2,164 patients for a combined $7.2 million, you know, through wage garnishments, property liens, you know, the whole toolkit that we've gone over.

After a public reckoning and a formal review, UVA overhauled its financial assistance, billing, and collections policies, released nearly all of its liens on patient homes, adopted broader charity care eligibility, and essentially stopped suing patients.
