In 2019, the Freeman, Cebu's longest-running newspaper, recognized Mogers as one of the top 100 Cebuano personalities.

Until his later years, Mogeres remained based in Cebu City, where he continued to write and mentor researchers as a professor emeritus at the University of San Carlos, USC, while remaining a central pillar of Visayan historiography and letters.

Ian Rosales Casacat wrote a detailed account of Mogeres' life and work.

Mojeres was born in 1943 in Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte, to two public school teachers.

His father was from Tanjai, Negros Oriental, but was born in Gina-Tilan, Cebu.

He earned his B.A. and then his M.A. in Literature at the University of San Carlos, where he also received postgraduate training from German anthropologists, notably Father Rudolf Raman.

Mogers later attended the University of the Philippines in Diliman where he earned his Ph.D. in comparative literature where he wrote the foundational study on the origins and rise of the Filipino novel.

In 1975, he established the Cebuano Studies Center at the University of San Carlos, becoming its founding director.

According to his profile in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, CCP, Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, Mogers was born to public school teachers in Zamboanga del Norte province on September 4, 1943.

He earned his bachelor's degree in English and master's degree in literature from the University of San Carlos, USC, in Cebu City in 1964 and 1969, respectively, and his doctorate degree in literature from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1979.

He began teaching in 1964 at the USC, where he was the director of its Cebuano Studies Center from its founding in 1975 up to 1996, and from where he retired as professor emeritus.
