Today's guest began her career by studying what happens to a person when they're told repeatedly that they don't quite belong.

Now, as a researcher at the University of Maryland, Dr. Marisa Franco spent years examining racial identity and validation alongside the psychological cost of being made to feel like an outsider.

She studied across so many populations and genres of work that it would be foolhardy to reduce her work to just that she did along racial identity, though.

Her work has become the foundation for everything she's done since then.

Fox 45 reports that University of Maryland police arrested two men in connection with on-campus residential burglaries that occurred on August 30th, UMPD officials announced.

Tuesday, Tyler Alexander Butler, 18, of Frederick, and Amir Christian Short, 19, of Mount Airy, were arrested and charged with multiple burglary counts.

On August 30th, UMPD responded to South Campus Commons Building number 3 to investigate three residential burglaries.

It's the medical science that determines whether someone really has a condition, whether they've really been healed.

And so whether or not you're a person of faith, anyone who is invested in any way has a stake in any way in the health care system right are you a patient are you someone who cares about someone who's a patient are you a health care provider everyone connected in this system in any way has has a stake in knowing is prayer a good idea right apart from even the question of does god heal through prayer there's the empirical question is there evidence that it makes a difference because if it does then even if you don't think God's involved it can be good medicine and if it doesn't then maybe you are just giving people false hopes if it never has an effect on someone's health so that's what we're evaluating and we use actually a standards that have been developed over the course of hundreds of years by leaders of the catholic church they were the ones who developed kind of specific criteria for what is out of the range of an expected recovery and so if you go all the way back to cases for canonization of saints for instance or more recently the medical bureau at the shrine of lord where a lot of people go looking for prayer for healing And the basic criteria are like, is there actually a medical diagnosis of the condition? Is it something that does the healing take place in a way that is instantaneous, complete, permanent and is there an absence of a medical or natural explanation for why you would encounter that and when you get those standards that would be something that's just out of the box miracle by definition now sometimes prayer for healing can be effective and maybe not right is it miraculous but then the empirical question is the practice of prayer itself something that you can do say even a a and a randomized controlled trial, which is something that we recently did with the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

We did a controlled trial with prayer for pain and anxiety, five minutes of prayer, five minutes of music, and found statistically the people who got prayer as opposed to music, even weeks later, their levels of pain and anxiety were lower.

Now, is this something that proves or disproves that God answers those prayers? No, we're not making that claim.
