University of Indonesia

a lovely description of the country and its people, but what about on the university's front, John?

The most significant ones, well, definitely the University of Indonesia, which is the national university.

Its biggest campus is sort of on the outskirts of Jakarta, and it's a wonderful place.

Also, the University of Gajah Mada, which was basically established as a rival to the University of Indonesia during the struggle with the Dutch after the Second World War.

It was sort of an independence anti-colonial project in its origins.

The other main ones to mention would be the Institute of Technology Bandung, or ITB, and Bogor Agricultural University, which is IPB.

Both of those started off as campuses of University of Indonesia, as did many other significant universities, particularly University of Ilangga in Surabaya and Hasanuddin in Makassar at the bottom of Sulawesi.

Quite a few other notable universities.

But as logging, palm oil, and industrial plantations fragment the forests, those old categories are having to do new work.

Our guest today is Imam Ardianto, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Universitas Indonesia.

His research on the cosmopolitics of human-tiger relations tries to hold together various kinds of explanation, usually kept in separate silos.

The biological account of habitat loss, disease and landscape ecology on one hand, and social and cultural accounts of myth, ritual, and moral obligations, what Indonesians often call kearifan lokal or local wisdom on the other hand.
