so you mentioned a um an article in the cyprus mail that appeared yesterday and that was in response or the conversation that's currently being had in cyprus um is in response to a conference that took place uh a few weeks ago at the university of cyprus and i i i happened to be there and i happened to um to to witness the discussions and be part of the conversations that were had about the increased use of Cypriot Greek in Cyprus, in domains where it wasn't usually allowed or accepted in the past.

So at the beginning of that conference, Fimos Panagiotidis, who is the chair of the Department of English Studies at the University of Cyprus, shared a personal anecdote from his experiences in Cyprus.

He's not Cypriot himself, he's originally from Greece, and when he moved to Cyprus to take up his post at university, he was invited to a very well-known professor's slash scholar's house, and he's the linguist, so he Professor Panagiotidis talked about how he was shocked that the person who was hosting the dinner, a native-born Cypriot, told him that he wished that by the end of his life the Cypriot dialect would have died out because he expressed very negative opinions about about super Greek as an inferior variety and he hoped that at some in the near future the Greek speaking part of Cyprus would move to speaking standard Greek like people do in Greece.
