I have a job where I oversee uh individual performance development performance and the context of a digital e-commerce agency that i help lead i'd actually do this as an assistant coach with a really high level group of elite athletes at the university of california irvine and i even just do this for myself purely for me if nobody else did it nobody showed up for my workout this morning but me and i got it done and i'm so so glad that I have this kind of framing that I feel like I discovered.

I didn't create it.

I discovered it and I get to live into it more every day.

Gloria Mark at UC Irvine has been measuring how long people stay on one screen before switching to something else.

Back in 2004, that average was about two and a half minutes.

If you're watching on YouTube, wouldn't you love to have somebody stay on a video for two and a half minutes? So across her studies from 2016 through 2020, the average was 47 seconds.

um i got a little uh turned about because like i was just kind of listening to the advice which is still real and valid that like it is not very realistic to be able to make a full living off of acting alone So when I went to UC Irvine, I went in as undecided.

And with the idea of doing something more practical, I lasted one day.

I went to my friend from high school who also went to UCI.

broke back over theater.

um and improv was a big part of that too when i was doing my tours for campuses like that was a question i was like what is your improv group like here you know like i really really wanted to continue and i remember at uc irvine too whatever student was giving me the tour i was like oh uh do you have an improv group And the student looked at me, sized me up, and went, yes, but they're very selective.

Oh, dear.

Yeah, I mean, I think that this is an interesting position for Katie Porter.

Had been a professor of law at the UC Irvine School and taught legislation, consumer law, bankruptcy, business law.

This will be an interesting position because largely unpaid, $100 a day is not very much money to do much.

But I don't really know...

Scientific discovery is often serendipitous.

At an obscure conference, during a coffee break, the most important part of any conference, a Professor F. Sherwood Rowland of UC Irvine would by chance learn about some intriguing new findings from a meteorologist who found evidence that these gases called CFC were accumulating in the atmosphere.

Something about this direction piqued Rowland's interest, and he filed it away in his mind.

After this direction collects dust for about a year, he assigns it to one of his postdocs, Mario Molina.

I think it's really about building a foundation.

One of the experts I spoke with, Mimi Ito, at the University of California, Irvine, she had this great quote.

She said, we spend too much time talking about whether kids have access to a device or not, and not enough time focused on what we actually want our kids to be doing.

And that really got me thinking, if you just immediately are focused on, okay, we get a half hour of screen time a day, What's the reason behind that? Why do you care? Why is a half hour the right amount of time to give your kid on a screen? It's really about backing up and deciding where tech fits into your life.
