I read about trade deficits and supply chains and importers and distributors.

At one point, I even looked at something from the U.S. International Trade Commission, which is how you know things have gotten completely fucking out of hand.

What follows is my attempt to answer the questions that actually matter.

What exactly is a tariff? Who really pays it? Which bottles are most vulnerable? Should you start hoarding scotch? Can American whiskey ride to the rescue? And perhaps most importantly, is there any conceivable trade policy that could force me to start drinking domestic vodka? Sorry, Tito's.

It's a well laid out process that we have to work our way through.

So we're in what we call the injury phase, where the International Trade Commission will be determining whether imports have caused injury or harm to their domestic industry.

We're really confident of what New Zealand has added to the US consumer and their sheep meat industry, and our sector has worked incredibly hard to provide the information into that panel.

So we're still in that phase.

This improbable estimate may even be too conservative.

The U.S. International Trade Commission reports that consumers jettison about half of all fast fashion items, which it defines, rather bitchily, as inexpensive, low-quality clothing that quickly cycles out of style, within one year.

Of that unwanted apparel, about 13 million tons in 2018, 85% is annually sent to a landfill or incinerated.

Most of the rest is donated to charities or thrift stores.

So I'd probably list through four things.

The first one's probably the active investigation by the USITC into lamb imports.

So the outcome of that could affect market access conditions, but Beef and Lamb New Zealand's working closely with MIA on that, closely with the New Zealand government, with our partners in the US as well.

So working on a response to that.

iRobot's marquee legal fight, the one filed against Hoover, Bissell, and a handful of Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers back in April 2017, that's just reached its conclusion.

The International Trade Commission rules that Hoover's Quest 1000 robotic vacuum, along with multiple robotic vacuums from a Canadian company called bObsweep, has infringed on one of iRobot's patents.

The commission bars those robots from being imported into the United States, and the ruling convinces other companies, including Bissell, to settle with iRobot.

They agree to pull their robotic vacuums off the market.
