He held the world record in the constant weight, no fins discipline from 2010 to 2025.

In total, he has broken 18 world records and won six world championships for free diving.

He won the World's Absolute Free Diver Award in 2011, and was appointed a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2021 for services to free diving.

And if all that wasn't enough, in 2019, he became the first person to complete an underwater crossing of a major channel, swimming only underwater over the course of 934 breath holds to cross the Cook Strait between New Zealand's North and South Islands in nine hours and 15 minutes.
