Ummagumma

You know, if we're the MTV generation, we don't know much about pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd.

And then you go to the record store, and they have, you know, all these weird names like Ummagumma, and, you know, Atom Heart Mother, and Music from the Film More, which you never, ever saw and still have never, ever seen.

[laughs]

And, and so it changes the number of albums that they have, really.

I mean, people would say, "Is this their seventh album?" Well, do you count the soundtracks? Does Ummagumma count as an album because-

Mm-hmm

... it's one al- it's two s- it's two discs.

Is that another one?

Oh, yeah

...

Yeah.

Floyd album.

I, I came up the same time you did, and I was one of those dorky kids.

"Oh, Pink Floyd, I gotta go buy Ummagumma.

I gotta go buy Atom Heart, Heart Mother." And, um, you know, the, I had relics when I was growing up, and even metal, you know? And so I lived through that and, and, you know, uh, j- spent your hard-earned money, [laughs] literally hard-earned teenage money.

And so, you know, at a certain point I just said, "Wait a second, these records are just terrible." [laughs]

I would say there are, uh, within that catalog, Pink Floyd, there are other, uh, examples.

For example, a lot of Pink Floyd fans will accept that, but they won't accept, say for example, what the band were doing the previous year on an album like Ummagumma.

They will not accept-

Yeah.

Yeah

...the second record of Ummagumma because it is more- Uh, there is more purely about sound design and experimentation.

And yet again, if you go forward to Dark Side of the Moon, On The Run is a piece of electronic music which a lot-- again, you would say maybe that's a good example alongside Revolution nine of one of the most, um, widely heard pieces of experimental electronic music ever made.

But it's actually a much more successful and, and, uh, piece of electronic music.

So they wanted to drive 55 right on the dime and be r- rebellious in the music, so there's that.

There's also the, I guess it's from Pink Floyd's Umma Gumma, where they, each member got to choose.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Th- like, they did a fantasy draft of songs to put on the record, so there's a side from each member and then a sort of odds and ends side.
