Ulverston

Um, and, and that was started really more or less where the Woodburn sits now.

That was actually a, a ropeworks, which was set up by a guy called, uh, John Winram, who came over from Ulverston originally to, uh, work and set up the, uh, what was called the Bath Shipyard in Douglas, which was, uh, financed by a Liverpool merchant called, uh, James Aiken.

But they set up the ropeworks out here in the countryside then, as it would be, uh, in about 1839.

And that's quite an extensive, um, piece of, uh, industrial, uh, archaeology really, in the sense that, uh, the actual ropeworks ran from what is the essentially Brunswick Road, up the back lane through to what's now the Wessex and slightly beyond there.

And then I, I guess I spent, my s- my, my sister used to go skating and she gave me a pair of Spri- Speedpro tu- tube skates for my birthday once, and then I just kind of lived at the ice rink then for, um, for God knows how many, you know, years and kind of just learned how to skate there.

And then next thing you know, they started having trials for an under 16s team that was starting, um, in, at the Ulverston Ice Rink, and I thought, I'll give that a go.

And then within about a couple of years, I'd, I'd made it to the Trafford Metros through the junior program and into, through the Trafford Tigers as well-

Amongst the latter, Broughton Tower, seated on the crown of a hill, rising elegantly from the valley, is an object of extraordinary interest.

Fertility on each side is gradually diminished and lost in the superior heights of Blackcomb in Cumberland and the high lands between Kirby and Ulverston.

The road from Broughton to Seathwaite is on the banks of the Duddon, and on its Lancashire side, it is of various elevations.

The river is an amusing companion, one while brawling and tumbling over rocky precipices until the agitated water becomes again calm by arriving at a smoother and less precipitous bed.

A band now that completely passed me by in 1996 were TC Hug.

They came from Ulverston in Cumbria, releasing one album and four singles, none of which charted, and this one is I'm Doing Fine, which was the third charted.

Initially... mostly what we do is that Darren will send me something and I'll try and work something out to it.

And then I'll, we'll send that to Becky and, uh, well, she lives up in Olderston and, uh, her son is now at university in Liverpool, but, uh, goes back to Ulverston, you know, during the holidays and stuff like that.

And they together will work out their parts and then we meet up and knock it together, as it were.
