Ukrainian Americans

Right now, yes.

Peter Zalmayev is a Ukrainian-American political analyst who has spent the last two years travelling to dozens of countries around the world to offer his perspective on the war in his home country and explore the views held by those in the countries he travels to.

He's appeared on CNN, on BBC, Al Jazeera, amongst other international networks, and he joins me now in the studio during his stay in Gibraltar.

Peter, thank you so much for joining us on Gibraltar today.

And Russia wants to prevent that from happening.

And you no longer hear any condemnation of these... things that happened from the White House, for example.

As a Ukrainian-American, I would have to express my frustration how the administration in the White House has been unresponsive to that.

And for whatever reason, instead, Vladimir Putin is rewarded by an invitation to the G20 in Miami.

and

then the final nail in the coffin was very much october 7th so on the night of october 7th as 48 americans are being slaughtered by the islamic terrorist group hamas as more than a dozen Americans are being taken hostage.

About half of them were killed.

The immediate reaction of the most progressive, the most elite, the most well-educated of our populace, our society, our campus, you know, the feminist group, the Muslim Student Association, they jumped out of bed, some were still in their pajamas, to draft what they called an emergency statement to blame Jews for the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and to side with the terrorists who were doing the killing and the abducting and the raping.

Well, as evident by the propaganda you spew each and every single day, no.

Unfortunately, one of the hallmarks of having a liberty and a democracy is people can say stupid things.

So when you talk about how 1% of our federal expenditures, which is foreign aid, is the reason why the Israel lobby had to take out Thomas Massey, you're referring to Americans.

I don't like AIPAC.

Yes, without question.

And as a Ukrainian American, I just have to tell everyone how extraordinarily infuriating it is that Trump is burning through all of our missiles, our Patriot system defense, air system defense on that whole region.

The U.S. is basically providing a military defense umbrella for the region, our allies in the Middle East.

And now they're asking Ukraine for weapons, a country that is dealing with an existential battle against a terrorist regime of Russia, where just last night was a hailstorm of Russian missiles on Kiev last night, like around a dozen civilians deliberately murdered in their sleep.

Uh, uh, and, and they're being thrown in detention, and some of these detention centers are, they're...

I'm hearing stories that there are Americans literally sitting in there with them, that because they got picked up, they couldn't prove that they were American.

They didn't have a passport on them and, and so then because they were in a Russian-speaking community, just like you were in a Haitian-speaking community or in one of these, uh, sp- It's, it's just terrible.

Lev, do you think that, uh, what do you think the odds are that this has come through Putin saying, "Start putting pressure on the Ukrainians in the US to put pressure on Zelenskyy"?

Why do you think Eileen was able to be all about it when Oral could not? And I can tell you by being a Ukrainian American in this country, having the blessing, the benefit of having a totally different heritage in my internal operating system, you see the world differently.

You have more sympathy for colonized people, for oppressed people, because you have your own background that you can easily relate to.

And so Eileen was Irish.

We have somewhat of a Manor College is the only institution in the country founded by Ukrainian sisters.

So we have some Ukrainian museum on campus and we're just integrated into the Ukrainian American community here.

And we did a story about a student, Ben, who is a Ukrainian immigrant who came to the U.S. briefly after the war had started.

And another prospective student who was thinking about coming to Manor, who's also from Ukraine, saw his story on social media.

In the words of the German interior minister who announced this the other day, and this is, you know, part and parcel of something that is really quite alarming I mean sabotage arson attempted assassinations.

You had an attempted assassination of a Ukrainian American in Poland a couple of weeks ago.

It doesn't quite rise to the level of Article 5, which would require some sort of military response, but it's awfully close and seems to be getting closer.

What is the appropriate Western response to this hybrid war that Russia is
