Now, to be fair, it is a bit out there, but it worked.

Luckily, though, producer Ugo Tucci forced him to put it in.

And thank God he did, because it became one of the most iconic scenes, I feel, in horror history.

This scene, along with obviously the rest of the movie, also had a fabulous score.
