U.S. Route 9W

Many, many years ago when I was a young man, I was working in the...

I was working in what we used to call in those days a roadhouse in an area called Englewood, New Jersey, on a Route 9W.

And it was just across the river from New York, across the George Washington Bridge.

And one Sunday evening, when there were about 30 or 40 people present in the club, I was working with a six-piece orchestra where I was the head waiter the vocalist with the orchestra answer telephones and make out the radio programs these facts are very dull but they're very important to me I think and with the way you've received them I think they've just lost all of their importance but nevertheless they're very true and it was a usual quiet Sunday evening and sometime like in August or September and a party of people arrived and I noticed because of photographs a man who resembled Mr. Porter and of course I was absolutely astounded that he'd be in the same room and I had been singing only about a year and a half or two years and I had tried to do as much Cole Porter material as I could because as I said a moment ago I enjoyed singing his lyrics And, of course, for another reason, Mr. Porter, unlike Mr. Rogers, let's say, who doesn't go out and get loaded about any arrangement that somebody else makes of his music, Mr. Porter was a very liberal man in that sense.

And so give a little bit of a background.

Route 9W is an old, very picturesque winding road along the Palisades that runs from the George Washington Bridge all the way up to Bear Mountain and beyond.

It's a beautiful ride.

But it can also be a dangerous ride, especially when you combine it with heavy truck traffic, which is not supposed to be there, at least for local delivery.

Rob from Union City, and he writes, this song takes me straight back to Saturday mornings with my dad in his old 1970s Chevelle SS.

We'd leave Jersey City, head up Route 9W, and see where the road took us.

Dad always had this song ready to start our drive.

Those simple rides became some of my favorite memories.

And I did want to ask you a few more questions.

So one is about what's happened over the last year and a half on Route 9W.

So as a lot of people up in the North Rocklands area know, there was a pipeline that was installed going from all the way from Canada all the way down to New York City.

It was done by a company called Champlain Hudson Power Express.
