U.S. Route 321

Elisa's cell phone was at the house.

At 2.45, it was on Highway 321, heading north out of Hickory toward Caldwell County.

Between 3 and 4, it made three calls from the area of Christie Road, a rural stretch of fields and woods near Hudson.

Between 3.30 and 4, it made a call from near International Drive, and at 4.45, it was back home.

On the 25th, Elisa Baker rode in a police vehicle out of Hickory and directed officers to three locations.

In the accounts she would give, her husband had done the dismembering and the disposing, and she had just been in the passenger seat.

Where she took them was north on Highway 321 into Caldwell County, the road her phone had traveled on the afternoon of the 24th of September.

One of the three places was off Christie Road near Hudson.

And, Neal, for years, Kevin says, I've enjoyed and taken advantage of the farm stands, Highway 321 from Lenore City to the Blount County line.

But this year, there hadn't been any.

Do you know why?

I've noted this change in the map on my Time of Death podcast website.

Brown's measurements along the main highway, US 321, appear to be off by about a mile based on today's maps.

His calculations on back roads winding around Bluff Mountain are within half a mile of today's maps.

I think the most likely answer for the discrepancy in distances is going to be road improvements and changes over the last 30 years.

There are hints of an old state highway running through Townsend, and I'm not sure when US 321 became the four-lane behemoth it is today.

Once Brown's testimony about distances was complete and the map was put into evidence, District Attorney Al Schmutzer asked him about his response to a complaint filed at James Dellinger's house on Saturday, February 15th, 1992, the Saturday before Lester Johnson was scheduled to go to trial in North Carolina.
