S
32:14Steve HoovlerHOST
There's mile markers on the highway and from roughly mile marker 20 to mile marker 31, that 11 mile stretch is what we're talking about.

And then, you know, of course, the river continues on to Big Sky through the canyon and on to, you know, on to the Missouri and plenty of beautiful, tremendous fishing down through there, but we're, we're kind of focusing on the, on the park stuff and that's where we fished yesterday.

So I packed the refrigerator had the refrigerator full of stuff, had lots of dry goods, filled up the ID4, and then I headed out from Santa Rosa across Northern Nevada, across the Great Salt Flats of Utah, then down Highway 191 to Moab, where we set up our workshop headquarters.

From there, to the north of us was Arches National Park, to the southwest was Canyonlands National Park, and in between was dead horse point state park lots of stuff to see lots of good photo opportunities but also lots to know about those places so what i'm going to do right now is share what i learned and what i recommend All right, before I get to the specific sites themselves, I want to start with a few basics.

it's a separate fee if you're using a parks pass for the national parks which i highly recommend especially if you're senior you can get a lifetime national parks pass for eighty dollars forever to all the national parks and i just think it's crazy but dead horse point is a state park so it will cost you twenty dollars a car to get in there worth every dollar I will tell you it's worth every dollar.

And then one other little thing, as you're coming out, let's say you've done Dead Horse Point, let's say you've done Canyonlands, and as you're heading out back to Highway 191, sort of right on the corner there of SR 313 and 191, is a place called moab giants theme park this is fun it's just plain fun especially if you have kids what they have done is they have set up a half mile hike through time so you go through all the different dinosaur errors and they have dinosaurs in all of those areas to scale to scale and they look great these are not cheesy at all these are really well done each dinosaur has a very nice information placard usually has the footprint it has the time that they existed on the planet it has all sorts of information about them what they ate and you know all that kind of stuff and they look wonderful and they are fun and they're informative It's really interesting.

Perhaps it's a tragic lack of creativity that in a country with more than a quarter of its area designated as public lands, hundreds of millions are flowing into the exact same handful of places.

Just down Highway 191 from the turnoffs of two of Utah's most celebrated natural areas, Canyonlands and Arches, is the 5,000-person town of Moab.

Four hours from Salt Lake, more than five from Denver, and six-plus from Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, Moab is far from anywhere.

Yet, this tiny town and its world-class climbing, its year-round camping, its endless slickrock bike trails and off-roading routes, along with its awe-inspiring parks, pulls some 3 to 5 million visitors a year from the world over.

The park sits in southeastern Utah, just five miles north of Moab on US Highway 191, in a part of the state where the landscape can feel enormous, open, and surprisingly remote.
