So U-Roy changed the game and he did that while he was a resident on King Tubby's Hi-Fi.

So this brings us to King Tubby now.

So King Tubby, you have to picture, he was an electronic specialist who was self-taught.

Small caliber, small wattage.

Then he built it up.

And it was partly when he had U-Roy on the sound, it boosted U-Roy's career and it boosted Tubby's sound system.

At the same time, Tubby was servicing the machines at studios like Treasure Isle.

So it was either things like Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, or Jackson 5 rather, and Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye on one side, and on the regular side, Two Cinematos, and Delroy Wilson, and that's all.

You know who was beginning to get popular? U-Roy.

U-Roy was just breaking through.

He had three hit songs in Jamaica, three of his first songs released in Jamaica.

They're quite popular.

Ghetto Reggae is framed as a profound homage to the golden era of '80s and '90s reggae and sound system culture.

He brings in absolute titans of the genre to feature on the project, legends like Daddy U-Roy, Demelo, and Greentone.

And the production is handled by heavyweights who know how to capture that authentic analog feel, right? Like Kirkle Dove, Ed Robinson, and Jamoi Monteith.

Absolutely.

Now, that's wrong.

Evil Doers was the U-Roy DJ cut to Pocket Money, but that is not what you heard.

What that song actually was on the flip side of that virgin 12-inch... is a song called Stand Unite by the Gladiators, and not only did they have the vocal of that, but they also followed it with its dub.

So, yeah, so mislabeled, so people wouldn't have known, but that's actually quite a hard-to-find tune, Stand Unite by the Gladiators.

U-Roy also did a DJ cut of that tune, which was called War Is Over.

um and that is pretty much all we have time for tonight here on the rhythm selection thank you for tuning in i just thought i'd sort of finish the show off with a couple more um lp tracks well a 12-inch and an lp once again that uh gladiators b-sides and versions uh came out in 2025 for record store day and the album is called roots natty by the gladiators and uh it's it's nice besides versions some extended 12-inch mixes on there and that came out on the taboo one label uh diggers factory pressed it up And one more time, I can remind you that, yes, I am playing this Saturday, the 22nd of August.
