Tyne Bridge

[airplanes roaring] The run, now in its 45th year, began with a fly past from the Red Arrows.

The race crosses the Tyne Bridge and was watched by huge crowds from Newcastle to South Shields.

Many were running for fun, dressed as superheroes or film characters, and were often raising funds for charities.

The Northeast are amazing people.

It's just a lovely event, and you can feel that again, uh, this morning.

60-plus thousand people today, so it's just an amazing occasion.

The Red Arrows over the Tyne Bridge, you know, it's British culture, history, everything.

His time, one hour and 57 minutes.

Let's not forget about the jail.

St. James's and the Tyne Bridge are the two fancy ones.

It was really crap.

And, and the bridge was closed, first time it's closed, the Tyne Bridge.

Well, I say closed, closed to the public.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, the first one, we had the idea.

And then I wrote a letter to the police saying, we're thinking of organising a fun run, which may include closing a few roads, including the Tyne Bridge.

Well, the Tyne Bridge had never, ever been closed since it was opened by King George VI.

And I got a letter back from the chief constable saying, it is not our policy to organise events like this on the highway.

That's the paper trail for the event.

It's not there.

It was the iron and steel hub for the world.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed in Middlesbrough." Did you know that? "Along with the Tyne Bridge, but since the 1980s it's been in steady decline.

No jobs, no prospects." And Danny's in County Durham, about half an hour away from Middlesbrough itself.

But none of this... and, and listen, I think that, that, that what Tommy said was very strong about the idea of, of, of the, the lead in a race swapping and changing, but it's usually the same towns.
